How This Calculator Works
The simulator runs 10,000 independent bankroll paths at your win rate and standard deviation. Each path plays out hand by hand, drawn from a normal distribution. Alongside the simulation, it computes the Malmuth analytical formula from Gambling Theory and Other Topics as a cross-check. When both methods agree, you can trust the number.
The Drawdown tab matters more than the Risk of Ruin number for most players. RoR tells you whether your bankroll can survive indefinitely at a given stake. Drawdowns describe what the ride feels like. A 5% RoR bankroll can still drop 40 or 50 buy-ins before recovering. If you have never sat through a stretch like that, knowing it's coming changes how you prepare for it.
Win rate moves the results more than any other input, and it's the one you know least precisely. At 100,000 hands of 6-max, your 95% confidence interval is still roughly +/- 4 bb/100 around your observed rate. That means a 6 bb/100 winner in your database could plausibly be a 2 bb/100 or 10 bb/100 player. You need 200,000+ hands at a single stake before the number tightens enough to plan around. If your sample is smaller than that, use the lower bound of your confidence interval as the input here, not the midpoint. And if you have fewer than 50,000 hands, skip the formula entirely and use a flat 30-40 buy-in rule while you build a real sample. Your observed rate is also probably higher than your true rate. Table selection, soft player pools that have since dried up, and a few big pots that went your way all inflate the number. A common correction: assume your actual edge is 1-2 bb/100 lower than what your tracker says.
Standard deviation for most cash games falls between 75 and 120 bb/100 depending on format and style. If you are not sure, 100 bb/100 is a reasonable default for 6-max NLH. PLO players should start closer to 130-150. The collapsible guide above the inputs has ranges by format.
The model assumes your win rate stays constant. In practice, it does not. Tilt, table selection, stake changes, and improving over time all shift the real number. Treat the output as a baseline for a player who shows up and plays their game every session. If your win rate drops when you are running bad, your actual ruin risk is higher than the number on screen.
